New Phone!  So far, working great!  Wanted to get a new phone that did NOT include a full data plan.  I was surprised how limiting this made our search for a new phone.  There were literally 3 phones that we could pick from over at Best Buy….the other 8 phones available were all full data plan phones (extra $30/mo).  Luckily, this phone had pretty good reviews.  I just hope it lasts for 2 years!!!

P67 it is!!

From many different reviews that I have read, it appears as though the P67 chipset is the best approach for the abuses my system will be put through!   Looks like the ASRock P67 Extreme4 or the ASRock P67 Pro3 B3 motherboard.  Both of these are looking like decent motherboards, with the Extreme4 looking like the probable board.  Some of the heatsinks are a bit more durable, and useful then some of the heatsinks on the Extreme4 heatsinks.  A GREAT review lists some of these issues over at XTREMESYSTEMS.com.

Intel Z68 or P67?

While the Intel P67 motherboards are now being considered the “old” motherboards, I wonder if the new and improved features of the Intel Z68 motherboards are even worth the price tag for my new build.  I do not plan on running onboard video…..SSD caching benefits…..meh….probably will not be running an SSD.  Now, better video conversion would be a nice feature, but I usually set up my video grinding and go to bed anyway.  I am thinking with the Core i5 2500k that I am going to be utilizing, and perhaps eventually a core i7 2600k…..those speeds should be fast enough for what I need.

I say, go with a P67 motherboard, which is cheaper, and throw more at my ram / cpu / gpu.  Older isn’t necessarily mean it’s worse.  ASRock P67 Extreme4 (B3) LGA 1155 Intel P67 motherboard for the win!

E-MAIL of DOOM!

I have, after reading this article, I have decided that my GMAIL account is over-run.  Maybe over-run is not the right word.  Perhaps, INFECTED BEYOND ALL HOPE OF A CURE!

Because of this, a new goal of mine this summer, is to TAKE BACK MY E-MAIL!

This will include, unsubscribing, setting up LABELS, and setting up better SPAM settings.

Right now my GMAIL account looks like the image to the left.  We shall see if this is even possible.  I’ll post updates as things occur…..or don’t occur as it were.

CSV Files

Attempting to create a valid CSV file for a Batch user account folder creation.  Problem is, I had to export out of our Student Management system, a different CSV file with all the student names.  Now, I have to go in and manually type in the correct syntax needed inside the new CSV file so the PowerShell script can understand the file and generate the folders.  This might take a while….but, it is mindless work, just takes a while.

Star Wars audio book it is!!!

Group Policies

currently reading: Dark Force Rising – Timothy Zahn

Today is all about the group policies.  The main thing I am hoping I can do with these is to first redirect each user’s network storage folder to their Documents page, set up a password policy, set up everyone’s desktops and start menus to look the same, and set up some security so students can not delete / add programs or manipulate any key system folders or files.

I have read that all of this is possible through simply Active Directory Group Policies.  We shall see….

Decided to try out League of Legends.  Spose’d to be a pretty slick strategy/pvp game.  We’ll see how she fairs!

MEMORY LEAK?

I run a MineCraft server. Have for about 4-5 months. Lately, my computer at home, my desktop I want to replace this fall, has been utilizing WAY to much memory when it is in idle. Like 80% of my 4 gigs of system memory are being used. However, under the processes window in Task Manager, there the amount of ram being used by all the processes, from all users, do NOT add up to 80% of my system memory. I just rebooted, remotely, and when I logged back in, immediately shut down the minecraft server, since it is on autostart upon boot, and it is now sitting at a steady 1.38gig of memory being used. MUCH better. Makes me nervous though…..is the MineCraft Server the issue? Odd…..I suppose it IS still in beta!

GROUP POLICIES

……are AWESOME!  I can basically dictate what each user sees when they logon to the domain.  Where their my documents folder points, what icons show up, what the color scheme is…..THIS is pretty awesome!  Now if it only will work the way it is supposed to work on paper!

NEW FIBER LINE

Well, the phone company came out today and began working on our new fiber line that should provide us with “50mb/sec” connection speeds. I use the QUOTES because, what we are told, and what we actually get, has NEVER been the same.  We will see though.  Perhaps we can get a speed like this at the server room at least.  I understand as it trickles down to each system, we will lose speeds…but, dangit…we better not lose TOO much.  Above picture is the fiber-conduit I believe they will be burying by the side of the road.  WHEEE…bring on the fast speeds!
